Retro kits hold a special place in many football fan’s hearts. Whether you’re a vintage collector, lived through the era or simply like the design, retro shirts are the beholders of history. Getting way more nods that your latest strip, the nostalgia induced by seeing the same shirt worn by Maradona when he lifted the World Cup, never gets old.
With a close to one and a half centuries of history, there are thousands of jerseys to choose from. Avid collectors take what they can, with some shirts being worth up to $600. The afore mentioned Maradona’s shirt from 1986, the actual shirt sold for $10,000,000.
Without venturing into the crazy value of shirts worn by players, we thought we’d take a look at some of the top retro kits from around the world. We’ve used our own due diligence here, and this is SoccerTop’s 5 Top retro shirts!
England 96/97
The Euro ’96 away strip for England from the classic match against Germany in the semi-finals, saw England pipped at the post in a tense penalty shoot-out. The shirt was worn by Gazza, Shearer and the Neville’s to name a few. With vertical light blue/grey stripes and a central 3-lions badge, it is one of the best England retro shirts.

Liverpool 96/98
Sported by Fowler, Paul Ince and a young Michael Owen, Liverpool were a force to be reckoned with. Fowler still to this day, the team’s top scorer in the Premier League. Made by Reebok, sponsored by Carlsberg, features the team’s emblem on a white oval surround as well as the authentic tag in the bottom right of the shirt.
France ‘71
France’s plain blue shirt with the classic French badge from ’71 makes the cut. The subtlety and minimalist look of years gone by, collared and cuffed with the red, white and blue of the nation’s flag, finished with le coq gaulois, the gallic rooster standing tall, the national symbol of France.
Juventus 98/99
By no means their most successful season but sported by some real legends of the game. Juventus’ 98/99 kit, with those iconic black and white vertical stripes found itself modelled by the game’s icons of the time, Zidane, Henry, Del Piero and Deschamps. Produced by Kappa, and with the club’s badge away on the sleeve, the simplicity is too good to pass on.
FC Barcelona 92
Winning La Liga for the 3rd season in a row, FC Barca’s 92 squad and kit were on form. This form carried on into the Champions League where the side clinched their first European victory. The kit, with the highly recognisable blue and red stripes that have been used since 1899, pays homage to the history, with nothing more than the crest high up the right-hand side of the chest.
